01Can a deepfake really be removed from the internet?
Removal is often possible when the person is identifiable and the content violates platform policy, an applicable right, or a non-consensual intimate imagery rule. No provider can guarantee removal of every copy: the relevant service or authority makes the decision.
02Is DMCA enough to remove a deepfake?
Not always. DMCA addresses copying a protected work. If the content is fully synthetic, impersonation rules, likeness and privacy rights, or non-consensual intimate imagery policies may be more appropriate.
03What should I do if the deepfake is intimate or sexual?
Preserve the URLs and screenshots without resharing the file. In France, Penal Code Articles 226-8 and 226-8-1 address certain algorithmically generated visual or audio content shared without consent, including a specific provision for sexual content. A police report or legal advice may be needed alongside removal requests.
04How long does removal take?
There is no universal timeline. Speed depends on the operator, content type, evidence, country, and any dispute. CRD tracks status and follow-ups without presenting a third party’s timeline as a guarantee.
05Does removal from Google also delete the source page?
No. Google explains that removing a result limits its presence in Search but does not delete the content from the website hosting it. Source removal and search de-indexing are separate actions.
